GAIL HAROLDSEN PORTER
NEIGHBORS ACROSS THE RIVER
Children reap what their fathers sow.

During the 1892 La Ascensión riot, Mormon colonist Charles Whiting and Mexican storekeeper Arturo Rodríguez, neighbors across the Casas Grandes River, join forces with other government supporters until soldiers can arrive and capture the revoltosos.
Five peaceful years later, Charles’s son, Frank, is excited to start sixth grade, except his teacher wants him to befriend the new Mexican kid. Arturo’s son, Tomás, despises anything that looks or sounds American, but his father insists he attend the school where everyone speaks English. Despite their initial dislike, the boys’ friendship grows.
But the governor has pardoned the revoltosos and they are back in Ascension. Can they be trusted to let bygones be bygones or do they have retaliation on their minds?
In Neighbors Across the River, residents of Colonia Diaz and La Ascension work to cultivate peace, but the seeds of revenge may already have been sown in their fields. Chronologically second in the Mormon Colonists & Mexican Rebels Series, the books in the series may be read in any order.
